This morning I read a Facebook note from my mom’s distant cousin. It was a note that is filled with grief as her mom, the cousin of my grandfather, was finally laid to rest (Too bad, we didn’t know until today). Yet, I couldn’t help but feel the excitement despite the loss. I guess I was feeling her mixed feelings too. See, in the morning she was given honors by the Philippine National Police of the Caraga Region 13, but in the afternoon, sent her mom to her final resting place. That is quite tough! It was a Testimonial Honor Parade that was given her, in recognition of her achievement as the First Woman General of the Armed Forces Reserve Force, the First Woman General of the Philippine Air Force, the First General from the ranks of political leaders, and the First Woman General from Mindanao.

She was also the youngest Lt. Col. at the age of 29, and and Col. at age 35. And I am sure, if you are a Butuanon, you will remember also, that she was the youngest elected congresswoman at the age of 26—
I couldn’t help but feel proud of Auntie Ching. That’s what my grandpa told me to call her when we met.. That was decades ago, when Lolo Ninong was still alive. I think I met her once or twice when I was young. Those where the days when my siblings and I would spend summers in Butuan City. I doubt that she will remember, as she too was young then.
Anyway, I am proud of her, not only because she is a relative. I am proud because she has given Mindanao another reason to rejoice and Mindanaoans to stand proud. I am proud of her because she has given women proof that even the worst adversities can make any woman strong.. I am proud of her as any Filipino should, from humble beginnings, have made it to the top.. And lastly, I am proud that despite her achievements, she still remained grounded, humble, God fearing and a good daughter. Such a very good example for all of us.. And with the passing of Lola Diding (GERTRUDES MORDENO MONDOY-BOOC), Auntie Ching gave her mom all the salute and praises she rightfully deserved. Well, I think that is the reason why God blessed her all the more.
I read all her other Facebook notes and I see that she writes from her heart. And seeing that she is determined to conquer all her dreams, I am sure that the former Congresswoman, now Brig. Gen. Charito “Ching” B. Plaza, will still have a long way to go. She has stars on her shoulders, yes, but she is determined to reach more stars, not only for herself and her family, but for Butuan City, Mindanao and the Philippines.. Truly, a selfless act to give honor back to who has supported her on her journey..
Auntie Ching and the rest of the Booc Family, Condolence po from the Mordeno Clan.. From all Butuanons, Minadanaoans and Filipinos, we are proud of you…
