School Year 2010-2011 Starts

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Well, School Year 2010-2011 has officially started. It’s now time for students to open notes, read books, write essays, make experiments and solve mathematical problems and equations.. That’s college life and some high school, and some elementary level students do some of that too, but not all schools give that as a requirement. In other schools, students are allowed to buy custom essays and ask help with their term papers.. Err.. Usually, it’s the parents who do.. Well, I guess that is because most students desire to get an A+ in those subjects.

But as a teacher, I see that that cripples students in one way or another.  The custom essays and term papers online should only be used as a guide or examples, but not to be copied per word or it will make the student lazy and may suggest dependency in the future. In the same manner, tutors are good. They can help the student in all their problems in school. But not when the tutor is the one who will do the tasks of the student.

I have seen and met a lot of mothers who continue to allow this dependency to eat their children up, and their children will often say that just because the tutor is being paid, he or she should be the one to do the stuff that they do not want, like assignments and projects, for example.

I wish parents would be uncompromising as to allow their children to really learn, hands-on.

Family—

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

My parents, along with my father’s siblings, went to Ilo-ilo City for the wake and funeral of my grandfather’s sister, Nanay Mediong.  Since school started early for River and Lili, and the budget was unplanned, my siblings and I didn’t go with them, so did our cousins who had to attend to  their own itineraries. It would have been a great time and a good venue to meet our relatives from Ilo-ilo.  We did plan a reunion in December, but it came soonest. Sad that Nanay Mediong had to die in order to make way for such meeting— When my parents came home, we had pasalubong, stories and pictures, as they shared with us their Ilo-ilo trip in full details.. Among the photos, what  caught my eyes was the one you see above. That’s the gravestone with a very simple epitaph at our great grandparents’ tomb. My Lolo Peping was laid to rest here in the city and when my grandma, Lola Viating, died, his remains were exhumed and buried together with Lola’s at the Oro Gardens. But his family in Ilo-ilo have also inscribed his name, as well as those other relatives who were not buried thereat..  In remembrance, I suppose…. But truth is, a family will always be a family— no matter how far each one has gone, the people back home will always find a way to remember. I am happy to see that my father as well as his siblings, have taken the journey back home.. The journey from where their lives have started..
